BADLANDS

MARK KING ROCKING 1978

My father helped me buy an 80-8 Tascam eight track for my studio. Badlands was one of the first tracks I ever recorded with it. I think it was the first day the recorder was installed and wired up, ready to record. I sat down, came up with the chords, wrote the lyrics and started recording. By dinner this was the song. Gary the drummer from Roulette recorded the drum track in the worst drum booth I ever had, a former coal bin lined with fiberglass.

The double lead guitar was created using a Korg MS-20 synthesizer, I set the builtin pitch to voltage converter to the music interval that sounded right to me (zero music theory involved). The hard part was getting the synth's oscillators to blend with my distorted guitar tone (there was NO digital editing back then).

BADLANDS was played on the KSHE '95- FM Radio, SEEDs program, a show that featured local bands. I sent the track in under the name of the band I was playing in at the time, Roulette.

My wife and I stayed up late and recorded the whole Seeds program at 3.75ips on a Pioneer reel-to-reel in order to capture this track and "What Kind of Man", another of my tracks, as they played on the show that night.
